A brief history of the NIV bible-
The NIV originally was published as a New Testament in 1973
The full NIV bible followed in 1978. This is the NIV 1978 and was in print from 1978-1984
The NIV underwent its first revision and was updated in 1984, and this is what we refer to as the "NIV 1984". It was in print from 1984-2011. All NIVs published during the years of 1984-2011 are the 1984 Edition. Being in print for almost 30 years, this edition was much beloved & many people prefer this text that they are used to
Since they stopped making these in 2011 they have become harder and harder to track down.
NIV 1984 does not refer to a print date, but to the Copyright date of the text. Be assured, the NIV Text remained unchanged during these years
The previous edition of the Amplified Bible was in print from 1987-2015. It is what we now refer to as the 'Amplified 1987' or the 'Amplified Classic'. The text remained unchanged during these years.
Since they stopped making these in 2015 they have become harder and harder to track down.
Sometimes buyers can get confused why there bible doesnt say the word "Classic" in their bible. That is because at the time of printing, this was just the current Amplified bible at that time. It is only called the Classic now that is is out of print to distinguish it from the now current edition. In the same way that if you were to buy an antique now, it will now say "Antique" on it, that is just what it is called now to distinguish its age.
The "NIV1984" refers to the copyright of the NIV bible text which was in print from 1984-2010. All NIV bibles from these years are the same, identical NIV1984 text.
Throughout those years, when different sizes of bibles or layouts would come out, they would be copyrighted in that specific year.
For instance there is a 1996 Large print thinline and a 2005 Large print thinline. The font and layout of these editions are different but the wording of the NIV Text is unchanged.
For the study bibles, the notes were updated in 1985, 1995, 2002 and 2008. And these editions will have those copyrights pertaining to those notes. But the actual NIV bible text remains unchanged.
